Surfing Our Way to Great Behavior!
S-Students
U-Use
R-Respect
F-For Others
In the classroom, we will be using several classroom management strategies including: S.U.R.F., Class Dojo, and Whole Brain Teaching. Class Dojo is an app for the classroom that follows the work habit and conduct behaviors on the WCPSS report card. Students will be assigned positives for expected behaviors and negatives when not following the expected behaviors. Both students and parents will be assigned logins in order to check their progress throughout the week. Parents will be emailed a report at the end of the week. Students will be able to accumulate points and exchange their points for items in the classroom store. At the beginning of the school year, we will use a clip chart system called SURF (Students Use Respect For Others). S.U.R.F is designed to be a daily management system to help students monitor their behavior. The students will move their surfboards depending on how their day has went and get rewarded with tickets. Hang Ten-is equal to a 4, Surfs Up is a 3, Yellow Flag is a 2 (student received a time-out) and Red Flag is a 1 (student received a phone call home or office referral). Students will be able to exchange tickets for items from the classroom store.
Additionally, I am in the process of researching and training for Whole Brain Teaching-a student engagement & classroom management strategy that incorporates movement and gestures to accomodate both right and left brain learners.
We have 5 rules we follow in the classroom:
Being a Bucket Filler is a character building program that refers to an individual who builds people up by helping someone or giving compliments. Students can fill out a compliment card for another student in the class and place it in their bucket. This is a great program to help build the classroom community and develop a respectful environment where everyone feels safe and excepted.
All these management techniques are supported through the WCPSS Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) practices.
