About Your Teacher
My name is Rebecca Snell and this is my journey. I am American born and proudly, Canadian raised. I grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, the capital of Canada. Throughout my years in Ottawa, I participated in many sports both at the varsity and club level including: basketball, rugby, soccer, volleyball (both indoor and outdoor) and ultimate frizzbee, just to name a few. Besides by love of sports, I have strong ties to the ocean as I spent my summers visiting family throughout New England from Maine to Rhode Island. I have found memories of family outings; digging for crabs, making sandcastles and jumping waves in these cool waters. I spent my elementary, middle school and much of my high school years, in a French Immersion program resulting in a bilingual certificate in English and French. At a young age, I spent my summers working as a camp counselor and lifeguard. It was here, that I fostered my love of working with children and I knew I wanted to have a career in education. After high school, I went to Carleton University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Sociology with a concentration in child development.
After graduation, I went to teacher's college at the University of Maine and received my Bachelor's in Elementary Education. I then moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to complete my practicum and substitute taught for the Halifax Regional School Board. It was here that I furthered my love of all things maritime. I lived a block from the harbor (second largest in the world, next to Sidney, Australia). Every morning and sometimes nights, I was woken up by the fog horn from the lighthouse in the harbor. While I was there, I was fortunate enough to experience musical ceileighs, the Highland Games, the Tall Ships Festival and go whale watching at Peggy's Cove. In addition to taking in the sights, I learned about the maritime history of the area including; the Halifax Explosion, the Titanic, and the freedom trail of the Underground Railroad where many African Americans started new lives, businesses and a thriving communities in both Halifax and Dartmouth.
Following graduation I made the move to North Carolina to continue my journey along the eastern coast. I taught first grade for 2 years in Warren County and experienced rural , northeastern North Carolina including: 'pig-pickins', fish fries, the local opry house, flea and farm markets and the lake lifestyle. Still, I missed my city roots and moved to Raleigh. I have spent the last 13 years in Wake County classrooms, teaching second, third and fourth grades. This will be my fifth year teaching at York Elementary.
In addition to being a teacher, I am also a proud parent of my 9 year old son named Kannan. He will be starting fourth grade this fall at York. I'm sure you will hear many stories about our adventures.
